Anthestiria (Flower festival) in Larnaca
May 2008 (Every year)
The Anthestiria Festival is a celebration of spring and nature's rebirth. A parade of flower floats and people carrying beautiful, fresh flowers fills Larnaca's seafront promenade.
The festivities date back to ancient Greek times, when feasts were organised in Athens every four years to honour the god of theatre and parties, Dionysus. Anthestiria were also the festivals of souls, plants and flowers, celebrating the rebirth of man and nature. The word Anthestiria derives from the Greek word anthos, meaning flower.
Be sure to combine your visit with a trip to the Troodos Mountains, where blue skies and hillsides full of poppies, gladioli, daisies and blossoming trees are a beautiful sight to behold.

Kalaklysmos
June 2008 (Every year)
The Christian feast of Pentecost is known as Kataklysmos (Festival of the Flood) and is celebrated all over the island of Cyprus, but particularly spectacularly in Larnaca. The people head down to the seafront promenade to hold fairs, watch boat races and water sports and to splash each other just for the fun of it.
Pentecost, which takes place 50 days after Easter, is the Day of the Holy Ghost. In Cyprus, the tradition of visiting the water on Pentecost is thought to have derived from the ancient veneration of Aphrodite. The goddess of love is believed to have been born at Petra tou Romiou, a series of rock formations just off the south coast of Cyprus, so festivals which honoured her would almost certainly have taken place beside the sea.
All sorts of competitions take place during the six days, including wrestling, canoe races and swimming races, while those on land indulge in some old-fashioned dancing and singing. By the evenings, the town is in full fair mode with delicious local food such as nuts, sousouko and loukoumades, washed down by traditional Cypriot wine, Commandaria.
Please note that other towns celebrate this event on different days.
